The inaugural Ruthin International Arts Festival is honoured to receive an array of excellent works from video artists around the world. The festival's screenings include films, short films, experimental videos, performance recordings, and digital images, a breadth of genres rarely seen in other art festivals.

'Elsewhere' reflects a shared contemporary condition. At this moment, we continue to witness the wars in Ukraine and Palestine, as well as other wars happening or about to happen in other corners of the world. We see news from the front lines on media and social platforms. Here in Ruthin, as in other parts of the world, we pay attention to these events happening near and far. ‘Elsewhere’ is no longer a mere utopian fantasy of distant lands but has become a tangible presence, with its genuine concern: Caring for those in distant places.

Video thus becomes the most appropriate medium to undertake this theme. Due to its nature, as an immaterial medium that can fully present itself through digital transmission alone, it eliminates the limitation of distance, freely moving between different regions. In a past era, video art was the tool most readily used by artists to challenge the boundaries between reality and illusion, public and private, collective and individual. Today, we hope to re-evoke the innate potential of video art in eliminating distances.
